IS Gothic art part of medieval?

  • MAIN QSTN: ''is BYZANTINE AND GOTHIC ART part of the middleages/medieval?'' ((example i have this work of art know as 'christ the pentacrator' found in monreale- i think its byzantine, but is byzantine part of the middle ages? or 'annunciation ' by simone martini-i found that its late middle ages )) thanks in advance

  • Answer:

The middle ages - also known as medieval times spanned the 5th to the 15 th centuries .Place and date are important. Art historians divided this period into eight stylistic movements among them Byzantine and Gothic, some of this art, like early Christian art (Rome and Europe), or Byzantine - Greece and the Orient were produced in particular centres. The Monreale mosaics (late 13th c.) are Byzantine (the Byzantine period dates from the 4th century until the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. The Martini Annunciation dates from 1338 and is example of 'Gothic Art - (mid-12th till late 15th century) If you scan down to the section titled Major Art Movements you will see the dates and details of each of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_art
