How do you make quality prints of your own paintings or drawings to sell to the public.?

Find someone in your area who does Giclee printing. They have already invested in the expensive equipment. Ask other artists for suggestion of a printer that will work with the artist until the print is correct. It is a really awesome method for professonal artists to get archival prints of their work on paper or canvas that are almost indistingushable from the original if they are done correctly. The advantages over lithography are that you don't have to do a large number at once, and they are much more fade resistant.

You'll need a very high quality film camera (or an outrageously expensive digital one $10,000.- plus) to make prints of art works. Have you tried taking photographs of your paintings? Not easy, you have to cope with reflections and make sure that the image is not 'skewed'. You could try printing the copies yourself using a desktop printer, but you'll need a decent size printer (more expense). You'll have to use 'archival inks'. On the other hand you could have your images printed by a professional lab. You'll need to include 'colour swatches' (made by amongst others, Kodak etc.) below your painting so that the lab has some idea of the colours in your painting. Nick

I have used my Kodak Easy-Share, and my Photo Stylus six color Epson printer . . . in my area at fairs and bazaars an 11x14 matted print sells for $22, and a 8x10 for $16. I have also order giclees online and been terribly disappointed that they were no better, or worse, than my own! A good, high quality, high resolution digital or larger format slide image is a must. But if I were to make larger prints (actually they should be called reproductions, as prints imply lithography) I would use a one of two Seattle companies that do this for artists. In one case the start-up, including the photographing of your work, runs about $50 and each print is about $45, or the other which charges by the square inch, which is a little less expensive than the first one after you pay the start up costs. At these prices, you would want to price your reproductions much higher, likely charging $75-100 for a 16x20 or 18x24 image size. I like to offer them matted and framed, as I do my own mat cutting and framing, and would be able to offer them reasonably and still make a profit.
