Artists: A few questions about art and business?
-
Hi, I'm curious to learn some things. It's all for personal interest. Please answer with as much detail as you like...more info is more helpful to me, so feel free to ramble. 1) How prolific are you? How long does it usually take you to finish a piece? 2) Have you ever tried to sell your work? -----If yes, did it go well? 3) If you have never tried to sell your work, or have not tried in a long time, would you consider doing it? Why or why not? 4) Assume for a moment that you want to sell one of your pieces. Would you opt to sell it yourself, or hire someone else to do it for you (either a person to sell it for a commission, or a consignment shop)?

Answer:
I draw portraits on commission. They're usually colored pencil/charcoal and they take about 5 - 8 hours apiece depending on how many people are in the picture and how much detail is in the original photo. I have a website and I sell them online/word of mouth.

1. I am very Prolific. I am the only african american male in the country that is a performance painter. It takes me 15 minutes to finish a 6 ft x 4ft piece. 2. Since I travel the country, schools pay for my show. At non profit organizations my paintings are auctioned off and I receive a cut. I have raised closed to half a million dollars for charities. When I am not traveling I do commission pieces for $1,500. 3. Since I have a business background, I know how to sell. The best thing you can do is find a target market for your work. Everyone likes different things. You job as an artist is to figure out what specific group likes certain things. For example if you paint horses, you would market at horse shows, training facilities, and Horse races. 4. With technology today you can sell yourself. The problem with letting someone sell your work is dividing the money. Most galleries have a 60/40 split, with 40% going to the artist. I hope this helps you. 1) I'm pretty prolific, if I'm drawing a decently detailed piece it usually takes me about 20-25 minutes. For sculpting and the like it takes me about 10-15 minutes at least. 2) No 3) I'm actually setting up a little online shop to sell my works at the moment. I figure it's be an easy way to earn money and not to mention it would be fun! :D 4) I would sell it myself! The only way to get things done right is to do them yourself, right? :)
