What fabrics to use for fabric painting?

What advice could you give me on how to use fabric paint?

  • I have never used fabric paint but would like to start doing some designs on converse shoes... I only have experience with ordinary paint like arcylic, watercolours, oil etc I did A level art) So what do i need to know about painting with fabrics for I dont have a clue! Im sure its not that straight forward like painting on paper? What are some good quailty frabric paints to use?

  • Answer:

Idk about brands, but you can always start by making/ using stencils and pressing on the paint with a sponge. It will look sharper and get you more comfortable with the media. (Make a design and transfer it on to a piece of overhead paper and cut it out with an x-acto for stencils). Acrylic also works very well on converse shows but try the fabric paints too. goodluck.

Go to a shop that sells fabrics and buy a paint called: Textile Paint. It adheres well to fabric and needs to be ironed (to set it) if you are working on items like t-shirts. Good Luck

I like Setacolour, but it is a bit difficult to do accurate painting on fabric as it is something like watercolours. For shoes I would use acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium, more controllable.
