How to preserve glass painting?

How do you frame an oil painting?

  • I have an oil painting someone did for me. I was wondering how to frame it. I'm wondering if you're supposed to put glass over it. I see old pictures with no glass. I just wonder what is supposed to be done to preserve it.

  • Answer:

Hi: You don't need to frame oils under glass, but probably about 6 months after the painting was completed, it probably should be varnished to protect and seal the surface. You probably will want the artist who painted the image to see that the varnish is applied completely and correctly. For framing, just pick a frame that seems to suit it. For ideas in framing, check out some local museums or art galleries to see how their artwork is framed. There is a framing source website that you can upload your image on, and then try out different frames and get a little preview image - pictureframes.com. Hope this helps!

The oil canvas has to be stretched over the wooden frame. If you want it to look right you should take it to a professional frame shop to have it done. If it isn't done right it is going to look like hell.

almost all the oil paintings that i have been are framed without the glass. i think as long as you avoid sunlight, it should keep the painting in good shape for a long time.

One thing it probably will look best staying the way it is on the wood frame. If you have to have it framed I suggest taking it to a professional framer because it needs to be done that way it is not something you can do really. There can be glass but typically there will be no glass because that has a chance of ruining the piece.

You can buy a toolkit, then some carved wood and assemble your frame: it's quite easy to do and I did it a lot. Be careful that the carving must be deep enough to enter your frame in it (21 mm or more). For one painting only, better go to a pro!

If you really like it take it to a professional framer. It will be worth the money. They will help you select a frame for it and frame it for you. Make sure the person that painted it tells you when you can varnish it to protect it.
