What is landscape like in France?

Why is the south of France of particular interest when it comes to landscape painting?

  • I'm currently designing an environment for a 3D animation which is set in the South of France and it was mentioned to me in passing that there is defining features about the area which makes it unique. It was also mentioned that people specifically go to the south of France. I know its meant to be a beautiful place but I wondered if anyone could give me and specifics of why. Thanks, Andy

  • Answer:

The south of France was popular in the beginning of plein aire painting because of the light. Open spaces with "big" sky are more popular subjects for landscape... which is why the Southwest is popular now.

Well, I know when I went there, in August, the fields of sunflowers were breath taking. I mean, thousands of them, for miles, as far as u can see. Lavender too, in the fields. Also, the coast line, and old, cobblestone buildings and roads. So many ivy covered stone buildings... Search for it on Yahoo, in the images, youll see... Good luck!
