Anybody use latex primer for prep. canvas for oil painting?

how will the finish be, too smooth maybe? Will it last without peeling? any help greatly appreciated, I cant afford gesso, so household acrylic latex is what i bought, but Im having second thoughts.

It would help more to know what brand and what kind, since there are different kinds of latex primers. But I would take it back and get some proper gesso. You can pick up a gallon of student gesso for under $20 at Blick art supply. http://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-studio-gesso/ The acrylic primer might react with your paint or it might yellow or have other undesireable properties like not be acid stabilized and will eat your canvas like the oil paint. If you have to use it, call the manufacturer.
