Painting on canvas and primer?

Can I use painting primer for walls on a canvas?

  • I want to start over my painting since it's ugly and I have no more inspiration to paint it! So I wanna start over with another painting, and re use the canvas. Can I paint over the canvas with white painting primer for walls? I have left over from painting my room, so I was hoping to save money and use it.

I don't know where amanda got her degree but that answer is wrong. You can paint right on top of the painting as it is without primer at all. I find doing that quite exciting because the under colours intermingle with the new paint and it's fun to do. The sanding down the original is a good idea, though.

No! Sand it and then use several layers of Gesso to prime the canvas. Wall primer is designed to prep for wall paint. You have to use the correct primer for the type of paint you're using, which would be Gesso for acryllics/oils.
