Painting on canvas and primer?

If u apply primer to a canvas can the brush be washed out in paint thiner or will it ruin the next painting?

  • and can water be used to clean it???

  • Answer:

If you have to use a primer and it's an oil-based primer then you will have to clean the brush completely or you will leave stains on the next canvas. If it's an acrylic based primer you won't have to worry. But why even use a primer at all? Use gesso. Gesso is designed to work as a primer and can be cleaned easily with soap and water (or just warm water) and is compatible with either oil paint or acrylic.

If you are using oil based primer, then you have to clean it out with paint thinner. The trick then is to wash the thinner out of the brush with soap and water. It should dry completely before you use it again. Hope this helps. I also hope you have more than one brush!!!

Smack it around like Bob Ross used to on his show. I don't remember what he said about cleaning brushes. But I do know that it depends on the paint as to how you should clean it out.
