Painting on canvas and primer?

When painting on canvas can I use a regular house paint primer or do I specifically need to use Gesso?

  • Normally when I paint I use Gesso (or something equal to it) as a primer. I have a five gallon tub of regular interior primer (for some unknown reason). Can I use this on canvas? Will it work just as well as Gesso (or at least relatively close to it)? I'd rather not waste the primer if I can use it, but don't want a lot of work to look horrible because I used the wrong type of primer. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Using any latex primer or paint for that matter on canvas will not be flexible enough and will crack for sure. Only use gesso. Latex primer does not have enough acrylic binder for art purposes. If you ever do murals on walls it would work as a primer for that.

Not a good idea, primer is used to go onto gypsum (aka. drywall) and then is covered with emulsion paint, enamel paint not oil or acrylic paint. But I have applied arcylic to a "finished" wall (primer, paint etc.) and there is no effect. I wouldn't reccomend it.
