Should pornography be considered an art form?

For my thesis - Is a painting or photograph of the naked male form considered pornography or art? And why?

  • Answer:

I think it depends on how the subject is treated, and also how the artist intends the work to be viewed. If the artist intends the work to be sexually stimulating to viewer, then I would consider that pornography. But if the artist is trying to show the male form as an object of beauty, I would consider that art. The viewer plays a large part in this also, because what one person finds sexually stimulating in an image can be different from another person. That doesn't mean the image is necessarily pornographic. Some good examples of the nude male form in contemporary art are: Lucien Freud - Man Posing, 1985-6; Naked Man on Bed, 1989-90; Painter Working, Reflection, 1993; Painter and Model, 1986-87. (His work is very provocative and deeply psychological) Alice Neel - John Perreault, 1972 Philip Pearlstein

It is considered art of course, as long as it isnt painted inappropriatly, im sure it will be fine it sounds like a great idea.

It would depend on the pose and activity depicted in the image. Sexually Explicit works would usualy be considered porn. Some images can even be both see Robert Maplethorpes' work for examples that may be seen as both art and porn

skygreen

it depends entirely on intent. if the picture is intended as a study of figure, space, shadow, etc., it's art. if it's just meant to get you off, it's porn.

Art is in the eye of the beholder, as is porn. I was going to reference Maplethorpe, but was beaten to it, but a study of his work and exhibitions should provide about all you need.

Batty

Totally depends on how it's portrayed.

A painting would probably be art. A photograph could be either. The reason for the distinction is that paintings would not be commercially attractive for mass distribution.

It's art regardless how it was presented. Because it has to do with the artist's own interpretation of his or her work.
