How many official and unofficial art galleries has London?

How much commission do art galleries charge (New York or London or large market)?

  • I'm curious how much commission galleries charge for art - I'm looking at an oil painting? I will try to go directly to the artist (Working on some common ties now). Is this usually allowed with most gallery agreements? She appears to have a few representatives but has now showed in a couple of museums. She is new but a rising star.

  • Answer:

A gallery in a large market generally takes a 50% commission on sales. This may not seem fair, but a good gallery does not just "sit there". Galleries invest a huge amount of time and money on artists. The costs for a staff, rent for a space, insurance, promotion, shipping, not to mention the fees for things like art fairs add up very quickly. The key for the artist is finding a gallery that is not only good at selling the work, but also nurtures the artist's long term development.

50 percent is what I've heard (NY) but maybe that was cuz the work is not 'easy' and needs time investment to promote. but to an artist, a great dedicated gallery is well worth it.

Yeah. 50/50 is the going rate. 50% for the artist who did all the work and 50% for the gallery that just sits there.

Until you get a more precise answer 20-40% of the sale price.
