Take advantage of foreign characters. The Japanese can make some CRAZY stuff with kana characters... Emphatic characters such as the umlaut can make fancy eyebrows and the like for horizontal emoticons, incidentally. ò.ó <---angry face! (づ￣ ³￣)づ <----Japanese dancing face...thing. The kana involved is hiragana zu, incidentally.
