How do i put a background on GIMP 2.6?

I NEED HELP WITH GIMP 2.6?!?!?!?10 PTS!!!?

• hi! , so i am having trouble with gimp.. everything seemed to be alright until like 2 days ago when i tried to change the color of the text and all it gave me was varitatios of grey! :/ am not the best at gimp since this is the 1st ever that i am actually using a editor like this or any editor as a matter of fact.. so i could of been something i did and still have no idea what x.x! idk what to do, no matter what i do all the color is grey! i like to put the text into a background and put a patterned outline on the text.. and now all it gives me is grey patterns too... everything comes out as grey... this is what i do and now its not coming out as colored!! http://tinypic.com/r/dpzeyr/5 i will post the link so u can see what i am talking about.. this is ***U R G E N T*** so 10 PTS TO BEST ANSWER!!! idk if it was something i did... i am afraid to event think about uninstalling :O.. i dont want it to be something so simple and then hit myself on the head because of it, so i need answers from someone who knows how to work with gimp very well!... http://tinypic.com/r/10ehbfn/5 ty n have a nice day idk if this was posted in the right section so if it isnt, plz let me know .. i was referred here by the website...
