Pros and cons of being an artist?

  • I love art. I love drawing and I've been practicing since this summer. ANd I want to pursue a career being some type of artist. But I want to know the pros and cons of being an artist. How do artists make money in general? I'd like to be a comic artist or an animator or something.

    Pro: -It's a job you'll enjoy -flexible hours -It satisfies that drive to create (it's like an itch you can only reach with a paintbrush) Con: -hard to get work -little money (most money earned it spent on equipment) -you'll probably have to have another job -it takes a lot of work to be successful I'm sure there's more but my mind is blank now.

haha... i'm a visual communications major. its basically graphic design. the pros are being able to show emotion and capturing that emotion and being able to move people through what i can create.... and thats very powerful! these pros make me feel like i can express myself which helps . but the cons... ouch. lol. the cost of the software like adobe and all the fun stuff... along with apple computers.. it all can be hard. but its all totally worth it!! as far as making money i plan on entering a design firm or advertising agency as an intern soon! ...and free lancing helps!

Pro: The hours are flexible It also doubles as an outlet for emotion It's something YOU want to do Cons: Well, it is very hard to make money unless you REALLY know your stuff, so finances can be hard. You could be judged as a pansy or slacker by other people (I don't agree with those views, but some people do)

back then in the 90's, if you pursue a career in visual, you'll end up miserable. but now, its one of the fastest way for you to earn a living.

Earn a degree in art and you'll be headed on the right path for economic success. By doing this you will be able to work for someone else...as an independent artist you will have more struggles than not.
