Who is a graphic designer?
-
Hello, I have a question about graphic designers. I have designed lots of posters for my college which they are all successful, but I want to know am I really a graphic designer? I am not sure because whenever that I want to design a new artwork, I search in vectors in websites and create the work by mixing them together. For example when I want to put a flower in the work, I don't draw the flower, I use the pre-made files that are available in websites like shutterstock.com. But anyway finally I create valuable artworks. So now do you think that I am a graphic designer?

Answer:
That's what those royalty free stock sites (photos and vector artwork) are there for! I work for a professional GD company and we often use those. It saves time and money for both us and client. Of course, if you were just simply taking the vector illustration as is and plunking it on the poster and tossing the 'title' onto it, then you may have to learn to be a bit more creative to be a graphic designer. But, by taking the artwork and manipulating it and have it be only a portion of your final piece, yes, I'd say that you are, or are at least well on your way to being a graphic designer. If this is something you enjoy, perhaps try taking a few GD classes so that you can better understand focus, balance, typography, colour, etc!

Yes without a doubt.Flick through a magazine and look at all the adds, they are vurtually all photo manipulation adds, adds with cars driving on top of buildings for example, these are all photo manipulation using photoshop or some other photo manipulation program. Being able to take pictures and put them together in a new picture is a great skill. One of the most effective techniques in recent years is to put together a picture in grey scale then add a coloured picture somewhere in it to make it stand out. If you create posters by using pictures from the web then you are a graphic designer. Professional designers get their photos from photo banks on the web.

You have the potential to be one, if you already have some strings to your bow. Extend and develop your skills in order to become more versatile and multi- talented. Learn the disciplines of graphics manually - Layout & arrangement, composition lettering and typography working to a client brief / commission photography illustration study the work of past and current graphic designers / illustrators - all the different syles, functions, etc look at advertising/ packaging , past and present I always say to younger people , supposing we have to return, for some reason, in the future, to a world where computers and other technology can no longer be taken for granted. If you don't develop skills in a more traditional way, how will we function ?
