How do you color line art using Gimp?

Question about coloring lineart on Gimp?

  • Ok, I have my line art in Gimp. It is transparent, and I have it on a background layer. Now I'm trying to color it. I can color it with the paintbrush, but when I use the bucket, the whole picture fills up. I want to do each part of the character (shirt, pants, etc) separately with the bucket, then make layers for those to do the shading. I'm new at Gimp, so I'm confused. How can I do this?

  • Answer:

The best way to color line art in GIMP is through layers. ❧First make your background white. ❧Next, in your case, the line art is on a transparent layer, so place it above the background layer.(this will make it all of the lines show on the white) ❧Next create a new Transparent Layer, and name it "Shirt." Look above and you should notice the mode is set to normal, change it to > Multiply (Note: you can play around with the different modes, you can also duplicate the layer, and set the duplicated layer to a different mode to get a different effect., e.g., First Layer Mode = Multiply | Second (Duplicated) Layer Mode = Burn.) ❧Color the transparent layer (Shirt) with the Paint Brush. (Note: The Paint brush is sensitive. i.e., if you select a font that has an opacity level of 50%, the paint brush will make it 50% opaque, while the Pencil tool will make it 100% hard (no opacity). ❧Repeat the process from creating Transparent Layer. Here is something that I did in Gnu Image Manipulation Program http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Gara3987/Gnu%20Image%20Manipulation%20Program%20ART/The_1649_Douay_Catechism.png http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Gara3987/Gnu%20Image%20Manipulation%20Program%20ART/Naruto.png

So make a new layer. Set the new layer mode to multiply. Add your colouring to that layer using the paint brush. Don't use the bucket tool - because if there are any gaps between the lines which encompass the area you wish to fill, the colour will leak out and fill the whole thing. Everything in GIMP is done with layers. Layers, and more layers. Learn about layers and you will learn GIMP quicker.

Are you sure the lines are completely closed? there may be some tiny gaps somewhere which I've had happen before
