In Avatar Fan Fiction, what are your views on using Chinese and Japanese words as names for characters?
-
I'm working on a fan fiction based on 75 years after The Last Airbender. One person said it's wrong to give them names based on their personality, but never gave me a good reason why. Hello, this is Avatar, there is no Chinese or Japanese, there's only four nations, so real world words don't have the same affect in Avatar. That's like in the movie The Last Airbender, many fools complain that there's no Asians in the movie (The Earth Kingdom was Asian), but hello, there's no Asians in Avatar, there's only four nation which are not real world nations. And many including Aang don't look Asian (he has big round eyes and very light skin; how is that meant to be Asian?) Ok, so the names I gave my fan fiction characters; here they are (these are their birth names, not nick names) *Hai Dao the Pirate (Chinese for Pirate) *Tuoyi Wu the Stripper (Chinese for Stripper) *Xinggan Xiongbu (Chinese for sexy boobs) *Meili the Whip Fighter (Chinese for Beautiful) *Mesu the Knife Thrower (Japanese for the B-Word you call arrogant girls) *Furiku the Knife Fighter (Japanese for Freak) *Shibo-Shitsu No Roba (Japanese for Fat---) *Kozo the Explosive Thrower (Japanese for Little Brat) There's an evil clan against Benders; they have an insulting name they call Benders; Hei Gui (Chinese for the N-Word). See, names are not easy to just make up random sounds; it's easier to take names and translate them. So dispite one guy mouthing off just because he thinks different, what's so wrong about basing names on personality? Just like there's no "Asian" in the Avatar world, there's no "Chinese" or "Japanese" language in the Avatar world.

Answer:
I think the issue with naming characters based on their personality is that it's not realistic, and makes the writer seem uncreative. If that happened in real life, that wouldn't make any sense, because how are the parents who name their children supposed to guess what their child is going to be like? And the names you've picked make even less sense. Who the hell would name their new born baby any of those? And for the record 'sexy boobs' is not a personality trait.
