How do you control your lines when drawing?
-
I've been holding my pencil wrong for years and I've just gotten used to holding the tripod grip. Now I write faster, but it still makes no difference when I draw. My lines are still shaky. Especially when I try to draw a horizontal line my hand will get stuck if I press down. My mom bends her fingers more than the usual tripod grip and she draws better lines. She said that if my hand will tire and hurt less from writing (drawing) for a long time, so I tried it her way but it feels too tight and it hurts just from holding it that way. She also said that i should go fast and press hard to keep my lines from being shaky. But I don't do that because then my lines will be to thick. I even got myself a mechanical pencil with the smallest (0.3mm) and lightest lead possible. My cousin uses a 2B 0.5mm lead and makes lighter lines than I do. How can I keep my lines light without making them shaky? How should I hold my pencil? What else can I do to improve my drawing?

Answer:
I press too hard when I draw, I waste way too much lead! My old grandad taught me a way of drawing straight lines.. loose grip, splay your hand and always go lightly... damn it it's too hard to explain, sorry. http://j-u-d-a-s.deviantart.com/

I think everyone has their own kind of line. Some are short and inquiring, some bold and definite, some draft-manlike and others fluid. Learn your own (what they call) style.

People can't really tell you how to hold a pencil. In fact your lines have nothing to do with the pencil. Shaky lines are a product of shaking hands. If you concentrate too much when you draw, that may be your result. Also, if you're right handed, drag your hand to the left when you draw horizontal lines, if you're left handed, like me, drag it to the right. It greatly reduces your risk of sticking to the paper.

For sketching do you mean? When it comes to sketching not everyone does just one long single line.... they draw a bunch of lines, just sweeping them together as they move along the paper. Take a look at some beforehand sketching (try Deviantart.com) and you'll see that the lines are often fuzzy, instead of one straight line. After you fill the drawing in you don't even notice. Check on you-tube for drawing vidoes, I bet that some of the people that draw there will be using this technique. Also, horizontal lines can be drawn using a ruler, but also remember this...many lines in life aren't exactly horizontal or verticle.....so shaky lines are ok. And don't expect writing to change drawing, or drawing to change writing. I have horrible horrible hand writing and my drawing skills haven't changed it at all for some reason...
