Answer:
While most of the programs in the Adobe Creative Suite have some functions in common, they are each designed to do certain things especially well. One CAN, for example, do a page layout in Photoshop, but it goes much easier and smoother with inDesign. Illustrator can also do a page layout very well, but if one needs to do a multi page document, or create a form template, inDesign Hancock Does these like a dream. One can do freehand drawings in Illustrator, but finishing and coloring is what Photoshop does best. Photoshop's pen tool can create a finely crafted vector shape, but it requires a LOT more steps than in Illustrator. AND you can't even BEGIN to do photo manipulation in either Illustrator or InDesign the way Photoshop does. Think of this analogy: if you learn to expertly operate the most complex combat tank in the world, does this mean you can fly a plane? They are both modes of transportation, but they have very different specialties. While learning powerful software apps, good coaching really helps, but it is possible to teach oneself, as long as one has good teaching resources. I recommend the zclassroom in a Book series published by Adobe Software Corporation. It is the same book and CD program used by Adobe certified trainers in their classes.. Each app will gave its own set of books and, for the full version softwares, are not cheap. Still, I think they are the best tutorials for learning the programs and not just teaching a handfull of trick and effects. When you really know the software, you can create your own effects.

I have taught myself InDesign (many years ago when it first came out), but I was already proficient in Quark Xpress which is the only comparable software. Photoshop does share a few features with InDesign but is very different in most respects. So you will not pick it up quickly if you teach yourself – a course (or book) would be useful to speed up your process.

Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign are used for entirely different purposes but many of the tool bars are the same, so if you're familiar with Photoshop you will have a much easier time learning it than someone who has no experience with Adobe products.
whatismyname?
No. Adobe InDesign is nothing like Photoshop. InDesign is desktop publishing software. Adobe Photoshop is a raster image editor. It is possible to learn InDesign on your own - it's not rocket science. If you have used any other desktop publishing software at all, you will recognize stuff.

No and Yes. Photoshop is one of the more complex programs compared to InDesign. InDesign is more for designing printable material, and Photoshop can be for just about anything.
