How do I sell stuff online?

How do I sell my art online...at all? Without having to worry about the whole copying and fraud stuff?

  • I have a few sets of drawings I've done, I don't know how to sell them by some way of creating exact replicas of the originals. They are so unique and very much detailed there is no way I could recreate one everytime one sold. Plus I want to keep my originals. I am hesitant because they are so well done and I put A LOT of time and effort into them, and I do not want some random person stealing them and copying them or whatever. I need as much info as possible on the whole subject.

  • Answer:

You can put a watermark over the image you upload online, making it harder to steal and be used. Quality prints can be done at ANY printer, there are a bunch listed in phone books, call one and go down to see if they'd have any trouble doing it. You didn't say what medium you used, but I'm sure a good printer can do the job with few problems. You'll be able to keep the original, and can mark the others as say 1 out of 5 and the date. If another print run is made, you do those the same way, 1 out of xxx and the date, 2 out of xxx and the date, etc. That's called a limited print run. The eBay selling is harder to do, there's too much competition. Try www.etsy.com for selling instead.

find a company that can copy them to look like exact replicas. if you want to sell them then put a watermark on your images and upload them to the internet! I put watermarks on all of mines because i know that people copy art all the time. if you would like, I can put the watermarks on them. in the mean-time try and get your hands on a good scanner.

I don't think they would be called frauds if you copied them into exact replicas. I mean just look at "The Mona Lisa". There are, believe it or not, a lot of copies of it and the original is kept at a specific museum. I hate to tell you this, but you will never find a site that is 100% able to give you that guarantee...And to be honest, it is part of being an artist..Art gets copied all the time, and some websites do show some sense of morals by banning someone who has infringed on someone else's work. All you can do is make sure your work is copyrighted, and if someone does steal your work, if they don't stop, or work out a deal to reimburse you, your option is to find a good attorney.

go get them copied at kinkos, office depot, staples, or some other place that makes copies. Just look up copy places in the phone book. some places are better than others, there is no real way to tell who's best because it depends on where you live, so check them all out. A kinko's in virginia could suck but one in california could be awesome, who knows? Then you can make your own website to sell the copies. Or you can go to a gallery like deviantart.com (or somewhere similar) that will make and sell the copies for you. There is no way to prevent people from copying your art. You just have to hope it doesn't happen. You can try things like low-res versions on the internet or watermarks, but there's still no guarantee. Because as soon as you sell a high quality copy, the person can copy it and distribute it or trace it or something.
