I'm 14 and wondering about careers..?
-
Hi, I'm 14 years old, and I'm not too sure what I want ot be when I grow up. When I was a lot younger, I always wanted to be a veterinarian. A few years later, I decided I wanted to be a vet in a zoo. I'd love to help animals, but I tried to watch the vet operating shows on animal planet and it was pretty hard. The bloody stuff just isn't really my thing. I started thinking about a year or two ago that I wanted a job that paid good money, but I also enjoyed. I thought that a psychiatrist or a pharmacist would be a good job, but I don't really think that's quite for me. So, I thought an anesthesiologist would be a cool job. But now I don't think I want a job in the medical world. Plus, I hate science.. I have been so confused about this. I'm in all advanced classes in school, and I get straight A's. I'm a smart kid, and my parents are sending me to college. I know I still have quite a bit of time to figure it out, and I'm sure I will, but I thought of a new career recently that I might really enjoy. Actually, it's two careers, but I was wondering if I could combine them. They are a writer and a photographer. I love to write, and I can write well. My teachers always tell me my writing is fantastic, and it's something I enjoy. English has always been my favorite class, and I think I do best at it; mainly the story writing. I have always been an amazing drawer. My mom, my teachers, my friends, all tell me it's unbelievably good. In my class, my pictures would always get second looks, and impressed people. I've also been told many many times I should become an artist. I'm not saying that to brag, but it was a nice feeling. Pictures and photography are kind of something I can relate to. I could lean either way though with drawing or being an artist and being a photographer. My main questions here are, can I be a writer and photographer/artist at the same time? Would I go to college for both? How much do both pay? What kind of classes do you take? Would traveling be an option? Any helpful information is much appriciated. And any sites that would help me out would also be great. Thank you in advance. :)

Answer:
you've got a great handle on things as it is, don't fret too much about things being a little unclear; like you said, you've got time to figure this out and things fall into place as you go along and guide you along the way as far as some of what you're asking, don't worry too much about specifics of how much jobs pay and exactly what you'll be doing on a daily basis in the height of your career - there's so many options out there for you; and the best of them, you'll create for yourself! i'm sure you can major/minor in writing/art/photography in college, or at least take classes enough to educate yourself to where you can take it from there and run with it, and originate your own style, make your own statement, embrace the creative energy that will come to you daily, if not much more frequently, and enjoy every minute of it i wish you the best

Your mind changes constantly, I promise you that. I'm 16 going on 17, I have to start looking for colleges soon, I don't even know what I want to do yet. I wanted to be an artist...a photographer...a make-up artist...a nurse...archaeologist...who knows yet though. ha My 50 year old dad said to me once that he doesn't yet know what he wants to be yet in life.

If you want to be practical, and still do art, think about becoming a teacher. And if you're a teacher, you can also teach photography and writing and whatever else you're good at. Alongside your teaching you can do some freelance work in all three of these fields. Or you can be a news journalist.
why not try to be an actor. if you have any questions on getting started just ask. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw--uQYL5o

I don't have real specifics, but I can give some advice. It's really great that you're thinking about your future, just don't get too tied down with it. I'm definitely into art and writing as well as photography. What I'm thinking is going to school for English with a fine arts minor or something. College can get you started in a generic area, and then as the years go on, you will most likely find out what exactly you want to focus on. And who knows, you may change your mind later. Start looking at larger universities and send them emails with some basic questions. You can get information from them very easily. Also your guidance counselor would be a great person to talk to. Colleges like students taking early interest, so just see what you can find! My college, Viterbo University, has a great english and art program. I'm in fine arts, and my roommate is an english major. It's a great school. Hope this helped some!
