What are deviantART commissions?

DeviantART Commissions- I don't quite understand?

• I'm new to the whole "comissions" ideas on DeviantART. If you want someone to do a drawing for you, you have to give them points right? But do you have to have like an original character for them to draw? because evey comission I see is of an original character. Can someone please explain to me how the whole process of comissions work? Thanks! (Sorry I'm sort of new at DeviantART) I tried looking on the Help on the website, but It doesn't mention anything about commissions.

  Basically the comissioner asks for the artist to draw something and offers to pay them for it, be it in points or money(send through Paypal usually). Oftentimes people have original characters which they like to see in other people's styles, so they comission that to be drawn. But it doesn't have to be an original character, it can be anything really if the artist is cool with it. Sometimes people like to see copyrighted characters drawn too, eg Miku Hatsune or Harry Potter.
