Fashion journalism schools in New York?

How to get into the Fashion industry?

  • Hey guys :D sorry this is going to be long :-) So i'm 13 and i need to start thinking about what career i would like to do when i'm older. My family expect me to be a teacher because everybody; and i mean EVERYBODY on my dads side of the family is a teacher. Being a teacher wouldn't be so bad but i don't think i could put my heart and soul into it because i'd rather do something else. I would also like to be a writer with all my heart but i'll explain later. I've always been interested in fashion. In my head it's my dream job. I can't explain how much i LOVE fashion. Everytime i go shopping or walk into a shop my heart skips a beat and i cannot believe my eyes. I would also like to join the fashion industry because i would LOVE to move to New York. (I think my mum might kill me because i tell her everyday that i'm gonna move to New York. I've even looked up studio apartments; sad right, but that's how real my dreams seem.) So i was thinking that maybe i could be a Fashion Journalist, because then it combines all the things i love; fashion and writing. I am serious about writing i have a wattpad and i write my stories on there for everyone to read; and my computer is full of my stories. But fashion is alot to me. I do have a few problems though. Recently in my school we did a fashion project to design hats and mine was RUBBISH. Seriously i got like a low level 5 for mine because i didn't even get to finish it. It wasn't really my cuppa tea, i would have prefered to do a clothing piece or something. I woulda been all over that <3 The next project we did was right up my street! Jewellery making. I had fun during this project even though my finished piece didn't come out looking so magnificent. We had to make 7 designs of a piece of jewellery on our sheet of paper and BOY did i! My drawings were okay and my teacher was VERY proud of me! I got a high level 5 in this project and even I thought my designs were quite good because......I CAN'T DRAW TO SAVE MY LIFE! Now back to my original question. How do i get into the fashion industry. DETAILS- i'm not very good on a sewing machine but i WAS rushed and i was rushing to finish my work. I think it would be more accurate if i were to have more time. I'm not very original- well i kinda am and i'm kinda not. -I cannot draw to save my life. I can't draw those template model thingys. I have a sketchbook at home with the models in and i draw designs on them. -My strong point it probably jewelery even though my finished product wasn't very good. -I'd like to have something to do with journalism as well because i LOVE writing like i love fashion. -I'm good at making accessories (i took an ordinary headband and wrapped ribbon around it and added some more accessories to it) i enjoy it alot. Where do you guys think i should start off. What should I do next? I want something to do with designing and journalism. Should I make a portfolio of my designs What should I do to help myself? Lots of love xxooxxooxxoo love you guys xxx please answer i'm confused xxooxxooxxoo I wanna know how to get into the fashion industry through designing or journalism. And what I can do at 13 to help myself get prepared. Please leave sensible answers x i appriciate it xoxoxoxoxo kind people <3

You've answered your own question. Start a fashion blog. As much as people talk about bloggers, they are now one of the most powerful people in "print". Start in your local area and stick to LOCAL people. That means, don't report on stupid national chain stores or what big huge designers are doing. Pay for your own website name. Pay for your own website hosting. And put wordpress on there and name it something fashiony. Then read up on the past years fashion news in your local papers, put a spin on the articles and put them all in your blog. Then when you have about 50 articles in your blog, start contacting local designers and ask for interviews. That being said, you better know English like nobody's business. There's nothing worse than reading something that has English mistakes. People will laugh, and more than likely never grant you an interview.

Since you're 13, you've got tons of time to get ready. Use this time to your advantage. Work on your sewing skills and become good at it. A good exercise is to rifle through your closet, take out the clothes you like the most and look at the seam lines, zips, buttons etc. so you understand better how clothes are made. You could also run your hands over some different fabrics so you can feel the textures and differences between them. For the drawing, well, you're not going to be great the first time you try. A little practice a day(like drawing a person, a skull, the reflections on an apple etc) will go a long way. Don't over exaggerate the proportions in a person until you understand regular proportions and anatomy, or the results will not be pretty. Here is a good resource for studying anatomy: http://artistshospital.deviantart.com/art/Library-reference-Humans-24705651 A portfolio wouldn't be much use(unless you are preparing for an interview or something?) but a sketchbook would be a good idea. Reading some fashion blogs and looking at other designers mood boards wouldn't hurt, and maybe even look at fashions from the past and all over the world. Museums, art galleries, landscapes- fill your brain with as much inspiration as you can! You can't create bricks without clay. And remember, you've got ages till you're going to study this with any real seriousness, so be sure to have fun along the way :) Good luck
