Peruvian artist?

Im an artist and ive failed all my art classes?

  • My father is an artist, and my grandfather was a prodigy artist. At age ten my grandfather drew a still life that most people in there college years of art cant accomplish. Im not the best artist, but I do consider myself one. I draw and paint abstractions, and well so far i have failed every art class i have taken because when they tell me to draw or paint something i always add my little thing wether its a rainbow sky with an exploding sun of colors in the background of an outside still life or even if its just a out of the world pot of flowers that i put in a still life of a figure painting. My art teacher kicked me out of his class....it all started with me not wanting to work in the enviorment i was in, why should i force myself to paint when he is telling me to when i know i wont do a good job doing it. I do better when im alone or with my girlfriend, the enviorment has to be right for me, and for him to fail me for not participating in art class is not right. I finished all my work but i still got an F because i didnt work in class, and I didnt follow his ways of art.... Art cant be taught its something you teach yourself, but what you can teach about art is to teach how free you can be in your art. I even told him look at the past famous artist Jackson pollack would sit in a room and stare at the wall for days then he would paint.... look at picaso altering the facial structers of people, all these artist have there own way of painting and expressing. why does he fail me for being my own type of artist and not falling into the "correct" way to be an artist....there is no correct way the only way is your way the way you feel right doing it.

  • Answer:

Usually art classes are for people who are new to the art world, or for artists who want to learn a new skill or advance in a particular method. I'm going to art school because I'm hoping I can pick up some creativity (loads of technical skill+ zero creativity= pretty lame artist... gotta work on that) and maybe expand my horizons by learning to use new media. But art is very personal. If you don't want or need to try things differently than you're used to, or you don't feel you're learning anything, don't take art classes. In art, there's nothing wrong with that. Some classes are more free than others, and some teachers more uptight or strict with their requirements... if you can't follow intructions, don't flush your GPA down the toilet by taking classes whose lessons you know you aren't going to adhere to. Just follow your heart like you apparently are doing already. It's pointless to take art classes if you're not getting anything out of them :)

Why are you in school if you don't want to learn ? Maybe you should find a different school that suits your methods. My art school was pretty flexible and they gave studio space to people who enrolled in certain programs. They also let certain students design their own schedule and their own projects for a semester or two. As long as they got things done, they were graded on their work, and whether or not they accomplished their goals. I went to CSULB.

That's very true, you need to be able to express your paintings the way you want i am a writer and i cant write when people are distracting me or in a loud place. You should have the right to paint and draw just the way you want. Its not right that you got an F, but unfortunately those were his rules and its his classroom. You should do research on the teacher before you get them and also if you feel the way you feel talk to him about it and if he doesn't agree than your pretty much screwed because art is not something you can do just because he wants you to do it it comes from within you but he probably didn't understand that because he was just teaching the class maybe it wasn't a class that you can just be free in. Well the only advice i can give you is to do it on your own and if you take classes for art maybe look over the description of the class before taking it. Take care

I suppose if you don't want to learn what others CAN teach you about perspective, color, shape, media, and everything else they try to pass on, you won't learn it.

If you do not like the way your teacher works why not talk to your father and/or grandfather, ask them to teach you.

You can ABSOLUTELY paint how you want to BUT...........you can't do it just yet! Here's why: Unfortunately, most art schools teach traditional methods and is systematically structured. With that point in mind, you should be strictly taking art classes to learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Even though you might not like your teacher nor his teaching methods, you can still learn something from the class. The teacher has a degree and years of experience in art, so soak up the knowledge they are trying to teach you. For the time being, follow the rest of the class and listen to the teacher. Every well established artist will tell you that they followed the structured course in school BUT.........when they graduated from art school, they did the style of art they wanted to! So again, you can ABSOLUTELY paint how you want to but you can't do it in art class unless that particular teacher allows your style of art. I know there are some people who do better artwork when being alone, but unfortunately, when you take an art class you are going to have to paint in front of other people. If the teacher tells you in advance what you will be painting in the upcoming days or weeks, do a quick practice painting at home, so when you get to class, you will have the paint colors and composition already in your head. If the teacher springs up a surprise painting assignment that is to be done the same day in class, try to block out the other people as much as possible and focus only on your canvas. If working in front of other people is still to difficult, find a private art instructor that can give you art lessons at home or take an online art class. Also, I'm assuming that you are taking art classes to get a degree in art? Most artists would like to have a degree attached to their name because it looks good on their resume when pursuing an art career and it sets them apart from an amateur or self taught artist. If your goal is to get a degree, then you are going to have to conform to your teacher's way of thinking in order to get a passing grade. If you are not trying to get a degree, then there is no need to take art classes because you already know your style and methods of painting. At that point, you could only take classes for light and shade, color theory, composition, and perspective in order to make sure you have a solid foundation in essential art skills.
