What should I be doing now for a career in graphic design?

What kind of Graphic Design career would this be?

  • I'm trying to understand the structure of the graphic design career field and I'm having difficulty getting a straight answer. I see myself working in some aspect where I get to create logos, business cards, brochures, etc. However, I'm not completely sure what this job title would be. I've seen it called production artist, layout artist, brand identity designer, art director and so on. Basically I want to know what this job is exactly (the highest position, my target) and where I need to start to get there.

  • Answer:

Every thing youve mentioned falls under the remitt of a graphic artist. Some of the other terms are specialist fields within the graphics industry and some are made up by people to make them seem important! The best place to start (assuming you have some talent - and this doesnt always meen the abiliyt to draw) is with a college course where you can learn to harness that raw talent, learn the fundamentals of your trade and begin to develop your 'eye'. Personally I then went to uni to study further - to degree lvel and tho its isnt always neccessary to take this route you will more likely succeed, progress faster in your career and enjoy it more. Check out your local colleges for courses!
