Impossible to get a career in anime and game art?

I keep hearing people say the field is highly competitive and you shouldn't even bother. Is it really that "impossible" to get a career in anime? I also hear game art design is really hard to? So what's the deal? Should I not bother trying to get into these career paths? What is a good path for someone who likes to draw?

Answer:
That's the career I'm working on right now in college. Every job you try is competitive, so even if you switched your career it's still going to be tough for you (so your not having an easy life either way). A good path for you is to use your brain and stop listening to others who have no real clue of what they're talking about. Besides you will not get a career in anime right away, you have to work your way up to get there (and most people do not figure this out until later on in life).

It certainly is hard to get jobs in existing, big-name companies, i.e. IW or Nintendo, but there are startup anime and game companies that always need new hirees. If you like art (and a bit of design and engineering) I suggest go for architecture, it involves a great deal of art and design, but the degree lends itself to many professions.
