Does Anyone Know Any Good Art Books?

Does anyone know of any useful and informative Art Books that help one with drawing the Male Anatomy?

  • I'm a learning Artist, and so I still have things I need to practice on. Right now, the one thing I have trouble with are drawing Males; Mainly with the Arms, Facial Structure and Legs. So I was wondering if anyone knew of any Art books that they would recommend; I don't want any books that have to deal with Artistic Nudity, but just with the body form, I guess more like a Ken doll. But it's really irking me at not being able to draw Males, so if anyone knows of any books that I could Buy from Barnes & Noble (Not the Internet), it would be greatly appreciated. P.S. If any Words are misspelled, I apologize.

The Hogarth book is okay, but I was a comic book geek for years (okay, still am) and got a degree in Graphic Design, a program which included a lot of fine arts training. For me, if you're looking for non-nude stuff, Jack Hamm is the classic source. He really breaks down how to draw various head shapes and faces, with sections on all the facial features, arms and legs, different poses, and he shows it in a lot of different styles. Mr. Hamm approaches it from an old-fashioned commercial artist point of view (the book has been around for over 40 years) so his people all look like they came out of a 1950s TV show, but the basics are there. Plus, he does a lot to demonstrate how clothing rests on the body in different poses and tips for not "overdrawing" the wrinkles. I think it's very helpful as a starting point. I am pretty sure you can find it at Barnes & Nobles or at least ask them to get it in stock. http://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Head-Figure-Jack-Hamm/dp/0399507914 http://www.coolworldpages.com/academics-education/article4270.htm

One of the best books out there is entitled "Dynamic Anatomy" by Burne Hogarth. Also "Dynamic Figure Drawing" and "Dynamic Heads" by Burne Hogarth. Your local library or bookstore should have copies of these, as they've been in print for quite some time and are very popular among artists, especially those learning to draw male figures for "superhero" comics. All three of these books accent all of the muscle groups from head to toe in the male figure, making it easier to memorize where they are and how to make those muscles pop in your figure drawings.

go print off pictures of men and trace over their form with a pencil and study it. and the only way to get better is to practice!

Anatomy for the Artist, by Jeno Barcsay Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Artist-Jeno-Barcsay/dp/1586631748 this link has a feature that allows you to see some of the pages, and it SHOULD be available at Barnes and Noble, if not, you can special-order it. I think I got my copy at Waldenbooks. Also, check out nursing books..... edit: this book does have some artistic nudity...but I have never seen an anatomy book that didn't...you could always go through it with a marker if you find it offensive.

I agree with the abover answerer: "Dynamic Figure Drawing" by Burne Hogarth. it's really really good.
