I feel like I'm wasting my life on my art?
-
I have great grades in school. If I REALLY wanted to, I could go out there and become a doctor or something like that. But I don't want that. I'm really interested in art. However, a few problems.... Careers in art are already difficult enough to find, and I really don't have the skills at this point to make it. That's fine, I was thinking about a career in Psychology or something. Another problem, I'm such a late starter in art, that I'm not as advanced as the other students, I'm not as far along. I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time by making my art. Should I be focusing more on my school, the like? Even if my art is my passion? I feel like I'm wasting my time. http://izayummikiwi.deviantart.com/

If you're 16 like your deviantart says, you're not that far behind. Sure, you're gonna run across people that are better than you. You always will, but if you always compare yourself to others you're going to seriously be limiting yourself. When I first started foundation art classes in college I was surprised how horrible some people were at drawing, but by the end of the first year nearly everyone was decent. So don't worry about your current skill level, they'll instruct you on how to improve your skills once you're there. In the mean time, just do what you can to improve on your own. And if you're thinking majoring in psychology would make finding a job easier, think again. Without going to graduate school, there is actually very little you can do with a psychology degree. And there are actually a ton of art related careers out there that most people who aren't already involved in the arts know about. On my first day of art school I was given a list of almost 100 different jobs I could do as an artist. It was real eye opener. Just to name a few: Painter, Sculptor, Printmaker, Gallery Curator, Art Teacher, Art professor, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Interior Designer, Product Designer, Architect, Website designer, jobs in art law, art librarian, Architectural Conservationist, and so on and so forth. Just do some research and if you're a creative individual you're bound to find something you like. BUT, make sure to keep up your grades. It's definitely not impossible to do well in school and with your art. Besides art schools loove good students. Out of my friends who went off to art school, the ones who got the best scholarships were the ones who had the best grades, and could write the best papers, not necessarily the best artists. Anyway, hope that helps :)

School work should be your first priority. It's not late to decide which career to take. If you want to take art as career, I suggest you find a part time job along with it. Since your interested in career in Psychology you can take art as a hobby. But for me, a professional job with good payment would make my life easier even as a part time artist. No, you did not waste your time. As long as your doing well in school that's all it matters. If you're doing poor because of art then I would consider it wasting my time ... Pardon my bad english. Good luck!

Art is never a waste of time, your art will out last you long after you are gone and forgotten. It is like a legacy of you left behind. So even if you don't make a career out of it don't give it up .Just keep it as a hobby if need be if you are as passionate as you say you are.And if in time for whatever reason your art starts to sell big time then change what you are doing and then stay with your art. But if it never does you have not lost anything .Just keep your love for art alive.

Look--if you're smart enough to be a doc, but love art--why not look into art therapy for a career? You could work at a hospital, and it's psych and art combined. With a minor in painting or art history, you could indulge your love for art, while having a rewarding, helpful career that would pay well, and where there would be opportunities.

there is no way creating art is a waste of time no matter what the circumstances are. especially if creating it is your passion. art is an amazing thing and since your getting good grades while keeping with your art then keep it ad a hobby and if you feel good about your pieces submit them into something or try to find a career in art as you try to find a career in something else.
If you can't make money doing something your passionate about, make it doing something you're interested in, that's what I do. My passion is music but I'm getting a degree in engineering because I'm interested in it. Music is a hobby for me, just like art should be for you.
I think you should stay involved in art, but also focus on school. School is critical, so you should maintain good grades. But you should also follow your passion for art. I think you should still be i art, If it is what your passionate about.
