How to make a picture look like a drawing?

How do you draw a picture and really try to make it look realistic?

  • I'm trying to improve my drawing skills. I'm having trouble drawing a picture of someone, or people, and making it look realistic. What I mean are things like body parts, or to show that the person is in motion or doing something specific, like playing, singing, etc. This seems kinda hard to answer, but what are some tips to make it really look...real, and not like some kid drew it?

think of size and spacing, once you have the proportions right a painting drawing looks more realistic a there are a series of books that are very good and give simple and informative pictures to try. they are called how to do watercolor and so on. don't know the ISBN but they are available in most book shops.

The three main factors arecorrect: lighting, sizing, and detail. Have all three in the drawing.

The more you draw the more your skills will improve. You can’t expect to be good at something unless you work at it. If you want to improve my advice to you is to take books out from the library. There are ones on figure drawing or drawing animals ect. You can also purchase books at craft/ hobby shops. I also suggest you take studio and art if your school provides it. You can also take private lessons. Just keep at it you'll be surprised at what you can learn in a year.

Actually I read a book about drawing techniques and it says add some shadow by using a B type pencil. Most of the time it gets really succesful especially using it with cotton. Another way on drawing good is to focus on the contour line(the main outline of the element).

First of all don't outline your drawings, by that I mean they shouldn't have a darker edge around them. This will make them much more realistic because outlining flattens things. Secondly use dark shading. Don't be afraid to press down hard with your pencil on your paper. When you squint at your drawing you should be able to see light and dark, it shouldn't look grey, if it does, just take your pencil and shade darker. I would suggest working in graphite pencil until you get the hang of shading and work from photos. Learn proportion, it's boring but highly important. Also fairly easy to get the hang of. Look at what you're drawing. I mean really scrutinize your subject. (this is why photos are the best, they don't move...hee hee) I find models the best to practice realistic with because they are so perfectly proportioned...lol

i practiced a lot with stick figures. i drew hundreds, in many many poses untill i felt i really knew where was every part of the body like head, neck, shoulders and so on in every pose, then i started building a body around stick figures, kind of like muscles on a skeleton. that really helped me understand motion and bodies in general. nowadays i can draw a person easily in any position by just figuring out where the skeleton would be, it's quite easy and i just draw the body around where i guess the stick figure would be if i drew one. hope this helps!

You need to work on the basics. Once you master the rules of anatomical proportion for face and body, everything will be easier. You must remember that inside a person's body there are muscles and bones, if you forget that then your drawings will look "unrealistic" and weird. Buy a good book about human anatomy for artists; also a book about human poses would be useful; finally and more important is practice and observation (watch carefully how do people really look in action or resting).
