What do you do when you have artist block?

  • When no matter what you do your mind is completely blank. What is it you do personally to get through your artist block?

  • Answer:

    I usually read a book or go walking to a park or beach where you can just sit and observe and let you mind fly... [when I do that I always bring my sketchbook with me, just in case something sparks...] I also start playing classical music... You can write write anything that comes to mind as if you were brainstorming, that helps a lot.

I stop stressing out, and go do something else. Visit a friend, drink a coffee. Read a book (by someone else) Take a walk Go shopping Anything at all - and FORCE myself not to think about "i need to finish this....". It works differently for different people though.

It was suggested to me in several of my college writing classes, that when you have writer's block- you try what is called, "Stream of Conscious" and just start writing anything that comes to your mind. If nothing comes to your mind, start writing the alphabet or just words that don't even connect and that might break the mind-jam. If that doesn't work, stop thinking that you HAVE to write something and go do something else that's fun and/or relaxing. Sometimes even when you get up and walk around or move- that will change a person's mood or feelings. Good luck!

I believe that we are vessels for creativity to flow through. When we feel blocked it means we are not receptive to the flow. When I feel this way I just play with my materials. I mix colors, scribble, try using different brushes, and also look through old sketch books. Go to the museum and look at work that interest you!

You might just be thinking too hard about it. Try to relax, and sort of meditate. Listen to some of your favorite music and just chill. Otherwise, just take some time and enjoy some things you like to do even if it's for a couple of days, and something will come to you.
