How To Draw Manga?

Is there any GOOD how-to-draw manga tutorial out there?

  • I really want to learn how to draw manga. And by manga, I MEAN JUST REGULAR MANGA! No chibi, none of that "moohy" crap that I once saw on some loser's website, no art that vaguely resembles manga, no copying other people's characters in any way, not even manga style gag characters (characters in manga that are meant to look like they're not manga). Also, when I say just manga, I mean the artwork itself (aka how you draw and what style you draw in, not what you draw), because I am also interested in anthro (half-human, half-something else) characters. By the way, Anthro does NOT mean "just some almost normal person with animal ears and possibly an animal tail," I'm talking about traditional-style werewolf type things (by traditional I mean NOT what you see in most werewolf movies that feature someone who looks like part human and part something that is not a wolf *glares with apocalyptic fury at the makers of scooby-doo*). Anyway, i also want something easily accessible.

My personal opinion on drawing manga-style is that you have to be patient and take the time to develop your personal style. For me, I bought about five manga books (the actual comic books, not how-to-draw) in the genres that I was interested in and after reading them, tried to imitate some of the drawings. I know you don't want to copy other people's characters, but it is a start. Alternatively you can try going onto deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com) and browsing under the "Anime" section. Try looking in "Top Favorites" and then when you find some pieces and styles you like, try to come up with any random character design you can think of, then try fusing some of those styles together. How-to-draw manga tutorials only teach you how to copy the other artist's style--but that said they can be very useful for beginners. You can try PolyKarbon (http://www.polykarbon.com) which I'm not really a fan of, but hey. Alternatively there are some people who make boatloads of money out of the manga/anime trend by writing books on tutorials, but as I said earlier they only teach you to draw in their style, not yours. I started drawing anime/manga style in mid-2004 and it's been 2 years since I started. I now do digital art (CG) for my drawings and I think I've improved a lot. Don't be frustrated if you can't draw very well at first--as all things are, drawing manga requires patience and practice. Doodle whenever you can, and take note of what you like. I hope this helps. ~krysjez (http://krysjez.deviantart.com)
