What do Graphic Designers Do?

What kind of work do Graphic Designers do?

• I was thinking of doing graphic design in uni, so I was just wondering what kind of career opportunities it has (I'm just looking at a wide range of options, and graphic design interests me) Also I was wondering what exactly you study at uni and what course work is done. I went to an AIE open day, which is a uni that specializes in graphic design, but I wasn't able to find much out about it there.

  Do you see the tool bar and links at the top of this page? A graphic designer created them. Do you see the ads on the right side of the page? A graphic designer laid it out. Do you read magazines, newspapers, books? A graphic designer did the covers, ads and much of the content of these. Look at the box of your Cocoa Puffs, Frankenberry or whatever "nutritious" breakfast cereal you eat. A graphic designer laid out, virtually, EVERY thing on that box, right down to where the UPC bar code goes and the "Best used by" date. Billboards Storefront signs Corporate logos The package your Pla-Doh comes in The box your Barbie or GI Joe came with. Just to name a few.
