How To Draw Expressively?

How can i learn to draw?

  • I am looking to find out how to draw, i would like to be able to draw still life portraits and pictures and create things from my imagination that look good when i draw them... And once i have become good at that i would like to be able to draw anime/manga style art Does anyone know how i can learn how to draw (for free of course) I know its not only a natural talent because i have been learning how to draw just by looking at things and drawing it from memory and i have noticed an increase in detail. Thanks

First off, fantastic! It is wonderful that you want to learn to draw. I have been drawing since I was 4, but I'm more intrested in western-style comic books. I have been told time and time again that there really isn't much market in anime and manga, UNLESS you have fresh ideas. Learning to draw is NOT free. You must be able to pay with your time and patience. It is a long, strenuous road of back pain, frustration, and carpal tunnel. HOWEVER, anyone can learn to draw. First, analyze the things you want to draw. Pick them up, touch them if you can. Feel how they curve or what the texture of the object is. Once this is done, you must learn to see through the object rather than see it as a whole thing. All things, either organic or inorganic, have basic shapes and molds. Remember to break things down into their most simplistic forms and you should have no problem. I would tell you, also, that to "warm up" start with "gesture drawings" of familiar objects. I.E. Chairs, people, fruit, etc. Gesture drawings are very lose, light etchings of general shapes and forms. This will help to loosen the hand to better move across the page. If you need anymore help, IM me and I'll share some tips and things with you.

Everyone can learn how to draw. We have been writing the alphabet ever since we were children, and that is a form of drawing. But one thing at a time, please. Lesson 1. Set up a simple still life and sit about 6 feet away from it. Without moving your head, study it for a couple of minutes then turn round in your seat and in 2 minutes draw a miniature drawing of the image still fresh in your mind's eye. Turn round and check whether you were correct. Now you can start to work on the actual still life taking care to note the spaces between the objects and not just the objects only. Once you have mastered a still life you can venture on to drawing a portrait.

Drawing sort of comes when your born (not trying to discourage you) but there are many classes that you can take. Search Yahoo for some art classes in your city. There are some free online courses you can take. The way you learn how to draw better is by practicing. When I was really young, I used to go to the table and just paint. I love to paint and now, I know that if I wouldn't have done that, I would be a horrible artist today. good luck!

I've been drawing for 21 years and I'm only 25. So in my case it is an inative ability to draw. If you are starting at a late age to learn to draw it will be harder for you than it would be for someone that started drawing at a early age to learn. That so because as you get older you lose alot of your creative since. I don't do this but my advice would be to trace some anime/manga drawings get the fill of how it is done after doing this for awhile get away from the tracing paper. and start drawing your own. I beleave this would be the best way to learn how to draw at a late age. I don't advice it its just a suggestion...

Drawing usually comes naturally. But you could take a class or ask anyone you know who is a good sketch artist to help you. You'll want to start with still life. Then when you get more talented try portraits.
