How to separate line art from the white in GIMP?

Art Program Help? (I'm Currently Using GIMP)?

  • I'm currently using GIMP as a drawing and painting program for my art, and it takes me forever to draw on it. I cannot stand how the line art comes out wiggly and jaggedy, so it takes me a long time getting it right and smooth because I'm an absolute perfectionist. (Also, I use a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet if that makes a difference) I heard that Paint Tool SAI had line smoothing and correcting, and I was wondering if any other programs had that feature. Also, what would be your recommendation on an art program? Please don't even bother mentioning Photoshop. I refuse to pay that kind of money for a stupid program. I was also looking into Manga Debut 4 for my comic I'm working on, so if you know anything about that, that'd be great. And if you want to laugh at my art, my username is XxCobaltCatalystxX. I'm not a bad artist, I just get really lazy and don't have the motivation to finish anything XD....I don't have too much digital up on there, just a Valentines Day card, some sketches, quick silly comics, and a portrait I'm working on.

My top recommendation is ArtRage by Ambient Design. There are numerous versions to buy, but I recommend buying ARTRAGE STUDIO PRO because it has the most features! Download the free trial of ArtRage Studio Pro Demo for 30 days at the OFFICIAL ArtRage website. * ArtRage Studio Pro has the feature REAL COLOR BLENDING on the canvas, that you can turn on or off. (Example: Lay down blue paint on the digital canvas. Lay down yellow paint on top of the blue paint, and it will blend together creating green paint). * The drawing and painting mediums in ArtRage look REALISTIC. In my opinion, the mediums in other art programs do not look that realistic. * Find the manual by going to the drive where the program was installed (usually its the C:/ drive). Open the main folder called Ambient Design and click on the folder called RESOURCES (or it could be in the folder called MANUALS). Open the file called ARTRAGE 3 MANUAL. Be sure not to delete any of the files located in the Ambient Design/ArtRage folder because these are the files that were downloaded on your computer to activate the program! Here is a list of other digital art software programs that are used for drawing and painting on the computer. Some of these programs are easy to learn while others are more complex. Some of these programs are 100% Free while others offer a Free Trial to see if you like it before buying it. To guarantee a virus-free program, always download the software from the manufacturer's OFFICIAL website only! 1. Adobe Photoshop by Adobe Systems Inc. 2. ArtRage by Ambient Design Ltd 3. Artweaver by Boris Eyrich Software 4. Autodesk Sketchbook Pro by Autodesk Inc 5. ChibiPaint 6. Color It! by Digimage Arts 7. Corel Painter 12 by Corel Corporation 8. Corel Painter Essentials by Corel Corporation 9. DrawPlus by Serif 10. Gimp by The Gimp Team 11. Flame Painter by Escape Motions (Peter Blaskovic) 12. Krita by Krita 13. Microsoft Paint by Microsoft Corporation 14. MyPaint by InTiLinux 15. NeoPaint by NeoSoft Corp. 16. OpenCanvas by PGN Corp. (PortalGraphics.Net) 17. Paint.net by dotPDN LLC 18. Sumo Paint by Sumo Ltd. 26. Tux Paint by Bill Kendrick 27. TwistedBrush by Pixarra Inc. 28. Ultimate Paint by J-T-L Development 29. Wizardbrush by Eusoftware Co. Ltd. NOTE: Some of the software programs mentioned above were specifically designed for photo editing and image manipulation of real photographs but people have come to use them as drawing and painting programs also. These include Adobe Photoshop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhK7kraboq4 , Gimp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeTYI4MFXdg , and probably others on the above list.

Photoshop CS5. Also for digital art, invest in a Wacom tablet for best results.

Photoshop is much the same as GIMP - it won't really help you with digital art. The problem is neither GIMP nor Photoshop are art programs. They are image editors, although you can draw with them, they weren't designed with that in mind. Neither currently have any kind of stroke smoothing. The best way to draw with them is to use the paths tool, and use it to stroke and fill. Not much use with a tablet though. Using paths is the only way you will get smooth lines, unless you have a really steady hand. One thing I do sometimes, this may help, but it's kind of a DIY solution, is to stick a piece of paper over the tablet to give it some resistance to the pen. Makes drawing seem more natural like you are drawing on real paper. The next version of GIMP which will be 2.8 will have brush smoothing. Problem is it isn't out yet, but soon I hope!! Paint Tool Sai might be fine, but it's old now - hasn't had an official update since 2008 - so try it out before you buy. Apparently there also is a fan-made version which is more stable on Windows 7 - but it's still not free. I much prefer to use MyPaint for raster drawing, it's so simple and easy, and has stroke smoothing too - what's more it's free and legal http://mypaint.intilinux.com/ - give it a go. Also the main problem with raster image editors, and that includes MyPaint, Paint Tool Sai and that Manga application is that any image you draw will be made of pixels and are not rescalable. The pro graphic designers use vector image editors such as Adobe Illustrator (but it's expensive too). However there is a free vector image editor called Inkscape http://www.inkscape.org - it has line smoothing too using the calligraphy/brush tool if you still want to draw freehand. If you do try it, make sure you get version 0.47 as the most recent version has a bug in tablet support. I use Photoshop, GIMP, Illustrator, and Inkscape, and MyPaint.
