What should I do to select ANIMATION as my career?

Career in Animation/Multi-Media?

  • I've always wanted to go into animation, but my parents forced me to go into biochemistry. My 2nd year is almost over and I had a talk with my counselor and I've decided to not listen to my parents and switch over to Arts to do animation. But now, does that mean I'm going to end up another 4 years (I'm attending a University)? Or am I suppose to go to a school that specializes in animation? Do I need a masters degree, or is a bachelors degree good enough? Also, my parents scared me into thinking that when I get out of college, that I will have a hard time finding a job in animation. Is this true? Will I get laid off a lot? They also told me the salary was so low that it was not worth it to get into this field, but I found the salary here http://www.careerinfonet.org/occ_rep.asp?optstatus=011000000&soccode=271014&id=1&nodeid=2&stfips=06&search=Go . Is animation a stable job (meaning, will I be able to go to work everyday, and not get laid off every now and then)?

  • Answer:

yes, there is more competition for jobs in creative fields, but chances are you'll always be able to find some sort of work (you can freelance and such) but i guess you also have to consider that you're going to have to work really hard to get a job that might not necessarily be what you want. for example, even if you go through for 2D/3D animation, it is very likely that you could end up doing web work, etc. as for the masters/bachelors thing, i don't think the title is as important as what you learn, cuz in the end your portfolio is the most important thing
