Graphic Design Senior Project?

  • I am currently a senior studying graphic design and for our final project we can come up a topic/ project on our own. We can create anything we like (ex. packaging, logo identity, books, magazines, the list goes on). The whole idea is that we are completely free to chose the topic in which we want to focus on and what we want to design. I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what I should do that will be a great asset to my portfolio. I am really interested in the idea of traveling and being abroad (being I had just spent 5 months in Europe) and wanted to see if there was a way I can focus on traveling but bring some sort of project/design aspect to it. I am open to any suggestions and recommendations! Thanks for the help! Anything helps! I'm really quite stuck on ideas!

    What is your ultimate goal as far as what you want to end up doing in graphic design? For example, if you want to work in packaging design- like the previous person stated, you could design food packaging for whatever country you're interested in. That is what you should base your project on. If you aren't sure yet, maybe do a type of project that you are currently missing in your portfolio. A fun project would be to do a sort of Zagat type guide/booklet. Since you mentioned you were in Europe for 5 months, maybe you can point out restaurants or places of interest that you enjoyed. You could even do a rating system of sorts based on cost or how much you liked something. Another thing you could do is to create a survivor's guide. You could design the packaging for all of the items and have a card or something that tells the viewer/buyer what each item would be used for. For example, if you created a survivor's guide to Italy you could include some kind of medicine that would treat heartburn or a stomachache due to eating too much. Stuff like that. Good luck!

Do a visual documentary of your difficulty figuring out what to do as a project. It could be done with video or still photos combined with your sketches or all of the above. This might be typical of the creative process and the struggle to come up with the idea. Animate the process even. When you're stuck, create what stuck looks like. It will get the wheels turning and should help. BTW, I'd want to watch it. Please keep me posted on what you do as a project. Paul Hebron

You could do a travel magazine, or design a poster for a European getaway. Or a good packaging idea is to design a package for a food of a country. Maybe it could be designing 3 little packages for, say, a box of biscuits with one from India, one from Italy and one from France (just an example), and they could all look the same but the handles could be the Taj Mahal, the Colosseum, and the Eiffel Tower, or something. So it's like they all work together but each has its own distinct cultural element. Or maybe you might want to design a logo for a travel agency. Anyways, good luck! I am sure you will think of something awesome :)
