Why do we have the dollar sign before every php variable?

Hi! $ means one dollar (with one l). Does the dollar sign with 2 vertical lines (ll) stand for anything?

  • I mean in the Scrooge McDuck world the dollar sign has 2 lines but in the real world does it stand for anything....? I have heard from someone that it means one million dollars but I don't know if this is true.

I had read in a history book way back in high school that the dollar sign with 2 "II" is/was the letter U superimposed over the letter S. "US" to mark money printed in the early years of the founding of the United States. Later I guess the ease of just writing 2 "II" over an S came to be the norm, then one "I". Just speculation from what I remember in a history book. Sorry I can give you references.

I'm don't think so. I just think it's another "Fonts" representation of the same character. (however, as usual... I could be wrong)

Whoa :) Just did a Google search for 'history of dollar sign' and came up with this extensive site... http://www.exeter.ac.uk/~RDavies/arian/dollar.html It does talk about the theory of the 'u' being superimposed over the 's' to stand for United States, there's also a bunch of other information all related to the dollar and the dollar sign. It's true....you can find anything on the net!
