How can I draw Realism but still draw anime?
-
I can draw anime and learning realism. http://dexy-barks.deviantart.com/ Every time I draw realism I have a harder time drawing in my anime style again. I usually cant remember how I draw the eyes, and its really annoying. I dont want to lose my anime style its taken 2 years to get it right but I want to learn Realism too. :c Suggestions or advice? Don't comment if you believe anime isnt art. It takes alot of skill and imagination and proper anatomy to draw anatomy. So don't comment if you're going to bash it down.

First, I'd just like to say that I browsed through your gallery and I ADORE your style. It's so unique, and it pleases my senses. I just thought I'd let you know that. You could try making a reference sheet for your anime stuff. Jot down in a sketchbook the face shapes/eyes/noses etc. that you use frequently, and the general construction you use to get them that way, so you can refer back to it when you've had enough realism. Seeing the way you constructed the pieces might help kickstart the anime center of your brain to help you draw it again. You could also try focusing on realism, since it's what you're trying to learn, and then come back to redefine your anime style. You might find you like it better the new way. The only other thing I can think of is to practice both equally.

Remember that Art -- including Japanese Art -- does have a basis in reality. The reliance on line is both an Eastern thing and forced by animation. The eyes reflect that asians have lower bridges on their noses than Caucasians or Africans do -- by making the eyes bigger they bring down the bridge of the nose relative to the rest of the face which is certainly as good a strategy as the traditional western one of making the eyes slanted, such as you will see in Joe Maneely's and Jack Kirby's Yellow Claw comics from the fifties. In other words there really is no such thing as anime, once you understand it. Just practice and take time to think about why you do what you do.

You should regularly practice both styles so you don't lose your touch in either. Good luck learning realism, it's pretty hard to make things look real.

Keep drawing and practice everyday.
