  • Answer:

Practice, practice, practice and learn, learn, learn. If you want to learn to draw cartoons, there are a several life-drawing concepts you need to take with you first. Proportion is the most important and obvious of them. You may not want to draw cartoons that follow every rule of realistic-drawing proportion, but a set of guidelines helps you keep things consistent if you were drawing many characters, like in a comic. Taking lessons is a great idea, actually. A class can help you really see what things look like instead of just guessing, and a teacher can help you see what mistakes you make (in a nice way, hopefully :) ). You just have to realize that you won't be great right off the bat, but you will improve if you take the lessons to heart. The more you practice and learn to constructively criticize your work (not just saying "it sucks," but saying "the arm needs to be wider here, and the nose is crooked," and so on), the better you will get and the more you will avoid and fix mistakes while drawing instead of after. Books will never be a perfect substitute for classes and people, but there are some pretty good ones that I listed in the "sources" section. Andrew Loomis's books are old but they're very accessible and have lots of illustrations. Whatever you do, just keep practicing your drawing! Good luck!

That depends on what kind of cartoons you want to draw. For manga, try: http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/ (That website is great!) For understanding comics and cartoons in general, buy this book: Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud (It's a great book which goes through all styles of drawing, how to be dynamic, timing, etc. Well worth getting!)

My advice is to take classes. I don't know your age, but most schools including high schools offer classes, local colleges and generally local artists offer classes several times a year. All libraries have books on drawing. Check the local newpaper generally the art classes are listed in there for times and fees. Good luck!

well first you should start with basic guidelines to help you out like regular shapes. for ex: a circle or oval shape for the head rectangular shape for the body etc. then form that into something new
