What brush tool medium to use in photoshop for digital painting?

Hi all, I'm self-learning digital painting thru the help of online guides and I would like to get advices from whoever have learned digital painting before. What kind of medium do you recommend me to use for painting portraits or environment concepts? I know i have to start off with tones and all the basic steps before doing this but still, do help me with this ^^ Any forum you can recommend me where i could discuss with other CG artistes? Or guides on digital painting. Help greatly appreciated!
