Is a Graphic Designer or an Animator a good well paid job?
-
Hey Everyone Today my dad told me that my dream of becoming an animator or a graphic designer is a un paid job and that theres no trade in it anymore..I got very upset as this is really my dream and what I've wanted to do for a long time now. And I was just wondering if what he said was true..As he also said that I should be an accountent or something with a 'high paid' wage. It's all about money.. when really I don't really like anything apart from art or graphics.. I am soon to pick my options and this has just muddled my mind completly. I need some advice. Thanks, Sofii. (I'm 13 and will pick options around early December.)

Answer:
It's a competitive field and you need to be on top with the latest technologies and applications. You need to work hard to have a great portfolio and to keep learning. It is a growing field, but it also have many people going into it. It can be fun but it also can be tedious at times. It depends where you work. The salaries of a graphic designer is not high. Average starting salaries for recent graduates is in the mid 20s. Average for experience designers is between 40-60k. Art Directors and Creative Directors make more than that but most designers do not become them as those positions require more people skills and business skills. It's a living. You won't get rich from it. Only very few can make really good salaries.

Its not dead, depends on where your at and what kinda of graphic designer you want to be. You can go into game designing and design game graphics, web design, visual graphics like flash animation. Definitely not a dead field and will pay decent depending on what you do, you can do prepress for digital company's getting files ready for printing or any type of production. I would say you would start making 40-60k a year and it can scale from there depending on where and what your doing. Ill say thing though, the field is very competitive, so if your going to do that make sure you become good at it, and know what your doing. your 13, you have a lot of time to choose what you wanna do, do some research, mess around with photoshop and all those cool adobe programs see how you like it and what not. See how you like it you can always introduce yourself to it before you start actually pursuing it cause you could definitely change your mind down the road.

pretty good job
Any job can be a high paying job, it just depends on how you use your degree. Graphic design is actually a rapidly growing field in the states and the degree can be used for a number of different things- It's even useful in the corporate world. Depending on what it is you want to do as far as graphic design goes, you will be entering a very competitive field that can be difficult to keep up with. As far as money goes though, you have potential to make a lot of money if you're skilled enough.

It depends in what environment you work in. If you work as a comissioned artist then pay is obviously not going to be regular and stable so you may need a part time job alongside. It also depends on where you apply your talent, most of the money for this trade comes from either being in advertising or teaching. But there is still a need for graphic designers, everywhere you look you will probably see something that a graphic designer has worked on: tv adverts, magazines covers/layouts/illustrations, wallpapers, hanging pictures...

it's a paying job, not the best but it pays better than most jobs that don't require a college education. Graphic designers earn anywhere between $36,000 to $95,000 a year, with the highest pay going to those who are senior directors or creative directors, and freelance designers earned an average of $57,000 to $65,000 a year.

Your father is thinking realistically about your future. What you need to do is show him that you have the "go getter" attitude it takes to become either of those types of artists. As far as the pay goes, it all depends on whom you go to work for. Go ahead and get the education you need, but always keep mulling it over in your mind as to what you do well in art and how it will fit into either career. I will tell you this, animators have been known to work for days on end to get a job done, while graphic designers can get jobs that have set hours so they can go home to their family. Just food for thought on that. An accountant, huh. They are about the same as the other jobs. It's all about who you go to work for, and how much work you are willing to put in to achieve your goals.
