Good art schools in California for animation/game art?

  • I'm looking into a career in animation or possibly game art. Money is a bit of an issue, but I still want to go to a good art school where I'll have a better chance at a good career in animation/game art than other schools. So far on my list, I have these schools: California Institute of the Arts: I heard this one was the best for animation, but they have a ridiculously low acceptance rate Art Center College of Design: One of the best art schools in California, but it's not the best for animation Laguna College of Art and Design: I've heard good things about this school, but I'm not sure how it stands as a college to study animation or game art Tell me if there are any other good art schools for the fields I'm looking at and how good these schools are too. Some other things that I am also considering are the tuition fees, how good the financial aid programs are, and how heavily grades and SAT/ACT scores affect admission, so please tell me these if you can! Thank you!

  • Answer:

All are very expensive schools. . If it's game art, look into the Gnome courses. They specializes in computer graphics. For the money, they'll get you the most in the shortest amount of time. But again, it's specialized stuff, you need to develop your fundamental skills, because that will carry through to everything you do.

Cal/Arts and San Francisco Institute of Art. For really good training expect to pay a lot. If you don't you will find that the kids who did have mad chops you won't be able to compete with.

Those are all very expensive schools. Art Center is the most expensive, and it's really not good for game art. But you, game art is a very narrow field. You might be much better off getting an art degree so that you will know a lot more than just one field. Become a great artist, and then you'll have your choosing. If it's game art, look into the Gnomon courses. They specializes in computer graphics. For the money, that'll get you the most in the shortest amount of time. But again, it's specialized stuff, you need to develop your fundamental skills, because that will carry through to everything you do. Hope that helps. -Wei www.artofwei.com
