What does it take to be a freelance animator?

What course will I take to be an Animator?

  • It has been my dream to be an animator! I really like to draw and also i'm a BIG FAN of ANIME. But I dont know if what will i get for college? Can you help me?

  • Answer:

To become any kind of animator, you must learn the basics, and you will have to study outside the genre of anime. This doesn't mean you have to give up anime, but when you watch anime, try to notice the movement and not just the look or the story. Some shows have great writing, but poor animation, some have great animation, but the characters don't have enough development. A.) Draw everything you see, draw constantly, study EVERYTHING you can about form, volume, shape, line, environment, perspective, anatomy, life drawing, draw it ALL. In order to work in the industry, you will have to know drawing inside and out. It doesn't matter whether you will be using computers or freehand, a foundation in drawing will help you to be a better animator.
B.) Watch all kinds of cartoons, watch the way they move, try to make your drawings convey movement. Take dance classes, do sports, learn how the body moves, learn how cars, animals, trees in the wind move. Notice the difference in weight of objects and how they travel. Notice the timing of gestures mixed with dialogue, can you notice the difference in the quality of movement, the way characters are drawn, the way expressions are conveyed? Get ready to spend a lot of time over your drawing board, diligence pays off, however, and you may one day yet find yourself drawing anime in a studio, happy as a clam.

i would suggest art if you want to do drawing animations, if you want to make computer graphic animation... then graphic design and possibly some technical school courses in animation like flash or something

i REALLY hate it when otaku ask this question. there are no colleges in america that teach anime art. further more, there are no colleges who accept portfolios full of anime art. learn to draw from life, and draw from life well. if you can draw from life, you can draw from anything. learn to draw styles you dont like either. youll learn a thing or two about drawing when working in a style you dont like, i can gurentee that. avoid drawing anime is the best way to go. the people who land the animating jobs are the ones that did well on their gesteral figuire drawings in charcoal. and they can draw realism fast, well, and capture emotions. once you understand the foundations of realistic art, its EASILY applied to the unrealistic (cartoons, etc.) the only way i know you could score a real career as an anime artist is studying animation here in america, learn korean, and move to South Korea where all the shows are drawn now anyways. anime really isnt as great as most people make it out to be. >___>; are you sure this is really the career path you want to take. being an otaku is one thing, but putting it into practice is another. i like watching anime, i do believe i have the ability/talent to be an animator, but i downright refuse that sort of job. anime has a lot of bad stereotypes that the followers anyways. (by both people who adore and know nothing of japan) most people who watch the shows know VERY LITTLE about the culture behind them and hate any other forms of animation OTHER than anime. they have very shallow minds and views in art styles and tastes. many refuse to read western comics that can be just as beautifully drawn and anime, if not better, colored, and have amazing storylines. (like Meridian by CrossGen, but i bet you havent heard of it because the company never got the recognition it deserved among girl comic readers because they were all to busy to read only manga and not care about american comics because they read stupid ones in the past.) get an understanding of film and sequential art and im sure youll be fine. oh, and btw, to my knowledge SCAD offers a manga drawing course and alot of the student projects will be done in anime. (many foreign students attend the college from taiwan and south korean, japan. and bring with them their influences over.) so if you still decide to ignore me and have dreams to be an anime artist. atleast take my above advise about the artistic aspects it requires and on the drawing part, because its true. ill post the official website to the college for you in the sources. hope that helps. :\

I dont find any formal training line for this, and I dont think it is a career line too. It is just a passing phase in commercial arts, and very artificial one, for people outside japan. I dont know if it good as a career. I would like young people to enjoy animation, but not get mesmerized to think as a career. So I suggest get groomed in well established schools of art, and when you are proficient, get into animation. if you still think so.
