What do they teach you in drawing classes?

Drawing help please (pretty long)?

  • I tried picking up drawing recently (like a week or two ago). And I did a few copies of anime wallpapers I had to get me started as I love anime and manga. It takes me long azz time too, like 1 hour to 1 hour and half to get the basic shape(face, hair, eyes, mouth)... I drew my hand a few times from life and then some stuff laying on my desk (my shading SVCKS BALLS). Then I found Andrew Loomis books... And all went o.k. until I came at page 39 of "Fun with a pencil", where that realistic head shape is. I drew it and it looked like sh!t(I just drew the very basic form with lines, no face in it yet), so I took on the "Just keep drawing and eventually it should get better" attitude people always tell you to have and sh!t. That was two days ago... I drew it like 500 times over and over and I didn't even come close, and ofcourse, I got frustrated (I did SO my best not to get frustrated, but I just snapped and a rage of throwing my fists at the wall next me followed. It makes me feel like an idiot... Its not like it's getting me anywhere, but I just had to get it off me as it was overflowing me). I drew a few other things ofcourse in those two days but I feel lost, if I can't even draw such a simple thing, how will I EVER be able to get where I want to be? What do I need to do? There's NO ONE to give me tips, contructive critism and guide me. I'm completly on my own. Where do I really begin, where do I gradually go to, where, why, what, when, with, how?!!!!! So what to do? There are no drawing classes close by or within reach and I don't own a car or sh!t. Sites always tell you to draw from life and sh!t. But WHAT PURPOSE DOES IT HAVE? WHAT WILL IT TEACH ME? WILL IT GIVE ME 70% OF WHAT DRAWING IS ABOUT? WHAT? WHAT? WHAT? WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET WHERE I WANT? Because I want to able to draw everything. I see those 14-16 year old's on conceptart being all pro and sh!t and then I read the comments and see comments like not bad >FOR A 14-16 YEAR OLD<---- WHAT?''''' I'm 20 and not even able to draw a simple face or copy somthing without it looking like utter and complete sh!t and they are not bad for 14-16 year old? THAT MAKES NO FCKING SENSE AT ALL Then I get frustrated again and want to fck things up till I break my hands. Goddamn rage. Don't tell me to see a therapist because they can SVCK MY BALLS TILL THEY DROP DEAD

  • Answer:

Start with something simple – an egg or a box. Build up a range of shapes. Combine them into more complex drawings. Do not try to run before you can walk.

1st, sketch with short strokes, then fill in lines after you are satisfied. 2nd, look at object after each stroke, skipping around to get reference points , mentally making crosshair through object and on your work. this way you see where you are "going" wrong instead of "went" wrong!
