How To Draw Backgrounds/Scenes For Cartoons And Video Games?

  • Hi! Could Someone Please Suggest A Book Or Books I Could Buy That Would Teach Me How To Draw Backgrounds/Scenes For Cartoons And Video Games? Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Thanks! :-)

  • Answer:

Check out the Gnomon Workshop (link below) they have a lot of instructional DVDs on how to draw/paint environments both interior and exterior. Here are links below on books. More books you should look at are the "Art of Star Wars" of "Art of Empire Strikes Back" check your local bookstore for "The Art of..." type of books, almost every visually rich movie has it's own books, with concept art of environments and costumes in it. Also: watch cartoons and study the backgrounds, emulate them, pause your video games and look at the environments. Study up on perspective, and try to look at a room from various viewpoints (ie: if you are in a museum, on the first floor, go up the the third floor and look down at where you were, so get an idea of how the POV changes.) Also: study architecture, scenery, types of terrain, the ways buildings are placed in cities, etc. If you are going to do backgrounds for video games, you will need to study MAYA, but getting a foundation in drawing is great. Cartoons can sometimes use computers, but depending on the style of the cartoon, old-fashioned painting might also be an option. Whatever the case, you'll still be expected to have a good foundation as a painter/drawer!
