How do you become a manga artist, or what are some other art jobs out there that involve anime?
-
i really want to become a manga artist and make my own books, but i don't know who to ask or what i need to do to prepare for this career. i also want a back-up plan in case this manga thing doesn't take off. im not sure what else is out there, involving art and anime. if anyone could answer my questions, please post them! (it also doesn't have to be anime, it could be anything that includes art, graphic design, or writing stories.)

Answer:
With tongue in cheek, I'll answer you this way: Animation has been around since Steam Boat Willie and Mickey mouse. However, Steamboat Willie is no longer popular. Manga art will follow its course as well. As such, your skill as a Graphic Artist must be well rounded. Becoming proficient at Magna Art will not guarantee a paycheck in the years ahead. (I'm speaking with 20+ years experience as a graphics professional.) Having a back-up plan is not only a good idea - it's a requirement to survive in this business. Some good advice: Start with the basics. It's what you will build on. Keep in mind, there are very few writers who do their own art work. And, very few artists who are writers. This doesn't mean you can't do both. It just means that you should concentrate on one at a time. There is a website called Lynda.com. There you will find online VIDEO self-training for most any computer software program available. It would be a good idea to visit this website to take a look at the different programs available to see which one interests you the most. All of the training tutorials allow you to view the first few training video's for free to see which one you'd like to learn more about. http://www.lynda.com/ If this is really what you've decided to do, then that's great. Welcome to the field of Graphic Arts. Just remember, there are several of us here that are willing to help you. All you need to do is ask. The most important things to remember are: You'll never learn everything - You'll always need assistance - You can never stop practicing your skills - And, you'll need more patience than you now have. This is just as true for me now as it was 20 years ago. And you'll be giving the exact same advice when you're my age. So, go on, take a look at Lynda.com. Spend some time there - learn where the video library is at and maybe you'll find the direction you'll decide to pursue. Good luck to you.
