I would advise working with some more advanced programs, working with drawing as well as a design. It's also important to develop a well-rounded portfolio, not just in graphic and digital media, but traditional as well. While you're getting a degree for graphic design, it's likely you'll be able to obtain an internship through a career office at the school you're going to. Alternatively, you can contact design firms where you may be interested in getting a job, and ask if you can send them a copy of your portfolio, or make thumbnails (little post cards, essentially) to let them know that you're around, and what your skills are. Be sure you're ready for a critique though.

In the design/advertising world today it is important to be a good artist, but it is also important to show that you are a conceptual thinker. The competition out in the design world is tough (let me tell ya) and there are a lot of great artist, but the thing that can put you over the top is showing your diverse way of thinking and showing how you can bring a different method of thought and creativity to an agency. Being proficient in many programs is important today as well - photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, aftereffects, flash, and final cut pro are pretty much industry standards. When you finish your portfolio, it is important to make it digital (in the form of a website) this makes sure that people can look at it in a hurry. The recruiters at these companies see dozens and dozens of portfolios a day, making it quick to see yours is very important.

I work as a professional freelance designer and I can tell you the best way to start off is to become an intern at a firm in your area. This way you'll network with a lot of people in your field.
