What Can I Do With a Degree in History?

What can I do with an Art History Degree?

  • Hi, I'm 17 and in a very prestigious art school. However, I'm EXTREMELY worried. By parents want me to go into Visual Communications because they are petty sure that I'll be able to land a steady job, however, I'm more into Art History and art preservation, I like the idea of renewing paintings and architectural things with historical accuracy in mind. I know what if i go into Visual Communications I'll end up having a steady desk job, but I'm willing to bet that I'll hate my life. So what should I do? I REALLY want to take the gamble and go into art history but I'm really nervous about the job opportunities afterward. I mean, will a BFA in Art History get me anywhere? BTW, I go to SAIC so I'm not sure if that plays a role in anything. And does anyone know how much money an Art historian can make? Please give me logical answers, this is my future! Thanks for listening to the problems of a youngling :]

  • Answer:

I'd imagine that a degree in Art History would be able to take you into several artistic fields, as it's relevant to most. I'm an Interior Designer and Art History applies to my field as well. I'd say stick with your passion, you'll always have more success doing something that you enjoy. Also, Art Historian and/or Restoration is a very important thing, and I'd imagine that they can make a pretty good living as well, but I don't know what type of salary they'd make, sorry. Best of luck to you!
