Dating an Asian and I'm black?

If im 1/8th asian, how many ancestors dating back to the end of time were of asian origin?

  • and what percenatge....? im black btw but my great granny was oriental.

  • Answer:

You're not going to get a better answer than "a lot." You had 1 Asian ancestor in your great-grandmother's generation, 2 in the previous generation, 4 in the one before that, and so on. You can't just keep doing the math (8, 16, 32, etc.) because once you go back several generations the same people start to appear in more than one place, especially if your ancestors lived in a small village. The other complication is that you have to decide when people became "Asians." When the first humans to migrate from Africa crossed into the Sinai (or wherever), did they become Asians? Or when they arrived in what is now the country of your ancestors? Or when they acquired some of the physical features associated with that area now? It's pretty arbitrary. An interesting question, but one without a meaningful answer.

If your mother was asian, you would be 1/2 If your grandmother was asian, you would be 1/4 Your great grandmother is asian, so you are 1/8 And everyone in the world has a common ancestor, and she came from Ethiopia. She was called Eve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_Eve So overall, if you want to go back to the beginning of the human race, we're all the same ethnicity!

1/8 = 0.125 or 12.5% It's usually better to use fractions to describe one's ancestry, rather than a percentage because you start getting ".5" and ".75" and ".125" results. In my experience, this confuses people, especially if you start rounding up or down (12% or 13%, for 12.5% as an example), and they start pestering you with questions or doubting your claim. Saying "1/8th" is easier for most people to understand, since it means one of your eight great-grandparents was Asian. EDIT: regarding your comment about eyes...many African peoples/tribes have "slanted eyes" as well, so it's not necessarily from your Asian great-grandmother.

you just answered your own question.. one gr grandparent was Asian, which makes you 1/8th Asian. Since no one can define "end of time" (or beginning).. and there are no records to definitively verify names of all those ancestors.. the question does not have any possible answer. All of us do the same.. we research as far back as is possible, depending on the surviving records. There is no way to define "end".

First of all, 12.5 percent = 1/8. Presumably, no one on earth is no more distantly related than 50th cousin to everyone else on earth. What's more, no one can trace his or her ancestry back to antiquity. Now, for a lesson in political correctness: Some Asian Americans find the adjective "oriental" offensive just as they dislike discussions about slanted eyes. Thus, in American English, "Oriental" refers to objects, such as an oriental rug, while "Asian" refers to people, although apparently it's perfectly acceptable to use "Oriental" when talking about your great grandmother in British English.

Wait, back to the end of time. That...you are expecting the impossible.

the percentage woulod depend on how many of the other ancestors were also asian. For example if you are using just to your G Grandparents if the amount of G Gparents is: 1 person= 1/8 or 12.5% 2 people= 1/4 or 25% 3=3/8 or 37.5% (add 12.5% for each additional person) How far back you go doesn't matter as to how many ancestors you would have that were asian of one of your Ggparents was asian: Calculate that if a generation is approximately 40 years (or 2 1/2 generations a year, that would mean 25 generations a century and 250 generations a milennium( lets say 3 millenium in time). Now add possibly 2 per generation (that is if both ancestors in that generation are asian) it adds up geometrically (2+4+8+16+32+64 etc etc.....) Just off the top of my head the number would be easily in the billions

Grandmother/Father would be 50% Mother/Father would be 25% so that makes you twelve and a half percent, though it is possible for you to have a baby that looks more Oriental !

DAVIDP

Ur 12,5% asian.
